Bengali Women: Culture and Art

We wish to introduce these talented artists to a wider audience. The paintings are of interest to those who have family links with the sub continent but also the many others who wish to have a deeper understanding of traditional life styles and culture. They will be of importance to young people and their teachers in appreciating the links and associations across cultures and the necessity of conserving fragile natural environments in which communities live and depend upon.”

This is the first group exhibition of original paintings by Bengali women artist Anita Roy Chowdhury, Swapna Sen and Arpita Basu. The artists come from similar cultural traditions but each interprets this in a distinctive personal style.

Arpita Basu uses motifs to create a pictorial representation of the ritualistic worship of nature.  Her water colours are held in collections in India and internationally.  Awarded a grant by the Pollack Krasner Foundation Inc, New York; a recent watercolour has been acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum London.

Swapna Sen’s paintings often depict traditional scenes and activities including festivals.  A recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship Award she works on paper in mixed media, with ground pigments.

Anita Roy Chowdhury is among the most well-known of West Bengali artists and is represented in collections in the UK, France, Germany and India. She has been described as a sensitive and sensual visionary.

David Lammy, MP for Tottenham and Minister of Culture in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport will open the exhibition at 2.00pm on Friday 9 March 2007, as part of the London Borough of Haringey’s celebration of International Women’s Day
