Global police women on parade
THE five-day International Association of Women Police Training (IAWP) Conference brought together over 400 delegates from 29 different countries, in Leeds September 2006. For those of you who wished you had gone – there is always next year and while Leeds is undoubtedly a fantastic city, for those of you born and bred in the UK – Saskatoon, Canada is definitely a more exciting conference destination!
The British Association for Women in Policing (BAWP)
BAWP was founded in 1987, and is the only organisation in the UK to draw members from all ranks and grades of the police service, both male and female, and associated organisations. BAWP has representatives not only from the 'geographical' forces throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but also from many others - including British Transport Police, Guernsey Police, Isle of Man Constabulary, Ministry of Defence Police, and RAF Police.

BAWP Aims.....
- To raise the awareness and understanding of issues affecting women within the Police Service.
- To facilitate and contribute to discussions on issues of concern to all officers - providing wherever possible the female perspective.
- To develop a network of professional and social contacts between officers nationally and internationally.
- To facilitate the sharing of information on issues affecting the Service, and women in particular.
- To contribute to the continuous professional development of all members.
Internationally, The BAWP is affiliated to the International Association of Women Police, which is represented at the United Nations. IAWP conferences are held annually. The 2003 event was in San Francisco, the 2004 will be in Boston, USA, in 2005 the world came to Leeds, UK. Future events will be in Saskatoon, Canada (2006), Denver, USA (2007), and Darwin, Australia (2008).
BAWP also produces a quality magazine 'Grapevine' for the benefit of members and others. |
